The short answer: Use Codex alone for coding, especially if you already pay for ChatGPT; add Brainwrite when you want Codex-powered bots working as a team across your business apps.
Private by design
Brainwrite runs on your Mac, or on your organisation's own server with the Organisation plan at $750 a year and a licence key for each paid year. Chats, files, and bot memory stay with you; bots talk only to the AI providers and apps you choose.
Security and privacy →Your AI, with no markup
Bots run on Claude, Codex, Grok, Cursor, local models, and more, under the plans you already pay for. Your provider bills that usage as usual; Brainwrite adds nothing to it, and you can switch a bot's engine without losing its memory.

Fair's fair
Where Codex is ahead.
If one of these matters most to you, it may be the better choice today.
Free to start
Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan, including Free. Brainwrite has no free plan and still needs an AI subscription behind it.
Open-source CLI
The Codex CLI is published under the Apache-2.0 licence, so you can read and modify it. Brainwrite is not open source.
Runs everywhere you code
Codex has a CLI, an IDE extension, a cloud environment and a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. Brainwrite is macOS only today.
Where Brainwrite fits
What Brainwrite does differently.
A team around the engine
A Chief of Staff receives requests and delegates to specialist bots, each with its own instructions, memory, working folder and tools.
Mix engines
Put Codex on one bot and Claude, Grok or Cursor on another. Pick the model per bot and per thread.
Business apps and approvals
Bots reach apps like Gmail, HubSpot or Notion through Composio, with per-bot grants. Risky actions show up as approval cards in the conversation.
Which should you choose?
Pick the one that matches your work.
Choose Codex if…
- You mainly want help writing and reviewing code.
- You already pay for ChatGPT and want nothing extra to buy.
- You work on Windows or Linux.
Choose Brainwrite if…
- You want Codex to be one member of a team of bots with clear roles.
- You want bots to work in business apps, not only in a code repository.
- You want local-first chats, files and memory on your own Mac.
Using them together
Yes. Brainwrite starts the Codex CLI you have signed in to and uses it as a bot's engine, so your ChatGPT plan or API key covers the usage. Brainwrite reads the models from the signed-in CLI. Codex bots use the browser and computer you choose in Brainwrite; Codex's own desktop-only browser and computer features are switched off for those bot processes.
FAQ
Brainwrite vs Codex: questions
Does Brainwrite replace Codex?
No. Brainwrite runs on top of Codex. It starts the Codex CLI you have installed and signed in, and uses it as the engine for a bot. OpenAI still does the model work and bills it through your ChatGPT plan or API key. Brainwrite adds roles, delegation, memory, connected apps, routines and approvals.
Is Codex free?
Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, so you can try it without paying. Usage limits depend on your plan. You can also use an API key and pay API prices, which OpenAI suggests for automation in shared environments such as CI.
Can I use Codex and Claude in the same Brainwrite team?
Yes. Each bot picks its own engine and model. A team might run its Chief of Staff on Claude and a coding specialist on Codex. Each provider bills its own usage, and Brainwrite shows token and cost figures per thread.
