Brainwrite vs ChatGPT
Brainwrite runs a team of AI agents on your Mac using AI accounts you already have, while ChatGPT is OpenAI's hosted assistant with the AI included in the plan. ChatGPT has a free plan, apps on every major platform and scheduled tasks. Brainwrite adds a Chief of Staff, specialist bots, per-bot memory and tools, and engines from several providers.

The short answer: Pick ChatGPT for a single assistant with AI included and a free start; pick Brainwrite when you want a team of bots with separate roles, tools and schedules on your own Mac.
Private by design
Brainwrite runs on your Mac, or on your organisation's own server with the Organisation plan at $750 a year and a licence key for each paid year. Chats, files, and bot memory stay with you; bots talk only to the AI providers and apps you choose.
Security and privacy →Your AI, with no markup
Bots run on Claude, Codex, Grok, Cursor, local models, and more, under the plans you already pay for. Your provider bills that usage as usual; Brainwrite adds nothing to it, and you can switch a bot's engine without losing its memory.

Fair's fair
Where ChatGPT is ahead.
If one of these matters most to you, it may be the better choice today.
Free plan and AI included
ChatGPT starts free and paid plans include the AI. Brainwrite has no free plan, and you pay your AI provider separately.
On every device
ChatGPT has apps for web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. Brainwrite is macOS only today, with other platforms coming soon.
Nothing to set up
Sign in and start typing. Brainwrite needs at least one agent CLI installed and signed in before your bots can work.
Where Brainwrite fits
What Brainwrite does differently.
A team with roles
A Chief of Staff hands focused tasks to specialist bots and sums up what they did. Bots can also share a group conversation.
Your choice of engine
Run bots on Claude, Codex, Grok, Cursor, Kimi, local models and more. Pick the model per bot and per thread.
Local-first
Chats, files, memory and agent state stay on your machine. Bots talk only to the model providers and apps you choose.
A computer per bot
Give each bot a local VM, a hosted cloud computer, your own VPS or this Mac, with a browser you can watch and take over.
Which should you choose?
Pick the one that matches your work.
Choose ChatGPT if…
- You want one assistant for questions, writing and research.
- You want a free plan or AI usage included in one price.
- You need it on Windows, iPhone or Android today.
Choose Brainwrite if…
- You want several bots, each with a role, memory and its own apps.
- You want to keep chats and files on your own Mac.
- You already pay for Claude, Codex or another engine and want to put it to work as a team.
Using them together
Partly. ChatGPT plans include Codex, and Brainwrite can run the Codex CLI signed in with your ChatGPT account as a bot's engine. Your ChatGPT plan then covers that bot's usage.
FAQ
Brainwrite vs ChatGPT: questions
Is Brainwrite a ChatGPT alternative?
Only partly. ChatGPT is one assistant with OpenAI's models built in. Brainwrite is a Mac app that runs a team of bots on engines you bring, such as Claude or Codex. Many people use both: ChatGPT for quick questions, Brainwrite for recurring work split across specialist bots.
Can I use my ChatGPT subscription with Brainwrite?
Yes, through Codex. ChatGPT plans include Codex, and Brainwrite can start the Codex CLI you have signed in with your ChatGPT account. Bots on that engine use your plan's Codex limits. Brainwrite does not use the ChatGPT app itself.
Does ChatGPT have scheduled tasks?
Yes. ChatGPT can run one-time or recurring tasks, and OpenAI limits how many can be active depending on your plan; check its help centre for current limits. Brainwrite routines run per bot, keep run receipts, and can post results to one thread. Local routines need the app running; Brainwrite Cloud runs them around the clock.
